He is the Tattooist, the one who marks each prisoner with an identification number. He's not proud of his role, but his will to live is strong and refusing means death.

One of the most surprising things about this book is the love story. If you read the author's notes, you realize it's true. Lale and Gita met at Auschwitz and fell in love.
