Book Review

(by- Linda )

I'm not only a historical fiction person, but I loved this author's first book, Clytemnestra, so this book was an instant yes for me. The backdrop for this story is ancient Assyria, around 823 BC. This is a civilization that contrasts beautiful opulent palaces with brutal warfare, horrific punishments, and a lethal political landscape.

This glimpse into an ancient world was captivating, as were the tactics used in warfare during this period. Still, my favorite part was the love triangle between Semiramis, Onnes, and Ninus, made more complicated by the interference of Nisat, Ninus's mother. It's complex: Ninus is King, Onnes is his brother, and Semiramis is married to Onnes. The dynamics of this triangle are compelling.

I also loved Simeramis. Her actions are sometimes morally gray but understandable, given her early childhood years. She was an orphan, and her adoptive father was not a kind man. But I loved her strength, ambition, and fearlessness.

In short, this is a captivating blend of historical detail, relatable characters, and romance perfect for those who love reading about strong women, ancient times and different cultures.
