The Secret Scripture
by Sebastian Barry

Book Review by - Andrea
Find a quiet place to enjoy this wonderful book for it is an exquisite story you will want to take your time with and absorb. Sebastian Barry transports the reader to 1920's Ireland during a period of conflict and limited opportunities for it's citizens. The story is rich in detail and has terrific character development as Barry shows the power of the society’s cruel judgment. There are many distinct voices and an excellent plot with unexpected twists and turns to the very end. This novel is about a woman who was committed to an insane asylum some 50 years ago, after reaching the age of 100, she finally decides to tell her fascinating life story. SECRET SCRIPTURE collected the Costa Award and was shortlisted for the Man Booker prize. It would make a wonderful Book Club selection.Back.
