The Women in White tells the story of two women across two decades. In the present, Riley works as a live-in caretaker for Betty, an older woman living in a house that looks like it's from the 1960s. In 1964, young Betty and three friends take part in a university study on psychic ability. Their friendship grows, but the study demands more from them than they expected. This book's strength lies in its well-developed characters. Riley is learning to trust her own judgment again after her marriage failed. Betty is warm but has been shaped by her past experiences. The doctor leading the study seems polite, but he is unsettling. He uses his position to take advantage of vulnerable young women for unethical psychic research. The Women in White is a departure from Pekkanen's usual fast-paced, twisty psychological thrillers. This one leans more toward a slow-burn historical mystery, with an emphasis on atmosphere and character.If you're expecting her usual page-turning suspense, know this is a very different kind of read. It is engaging, for sure, and yes, I recommend it, however, I did feel there were a few pacing issues, but some of this may be attributable to expectations - I was expecting a fast-paced thriller. This is a great book for readers who prefer character-driven mysteries rather than fast-paced ones. It is also great for fans of stories set across two timelines and stories about female bonding. Readers who want to learn about the history of parapsychology research or how women were treated in institutions in the 1960s will also find this book interesting. For book clubs, this book discusses important topics such as consent in research, the hidden power behind polite behavior, and how women were often dismissed or controlled in the past. The two timelines let readers compare different situations, and Riley and Betty help readers engage in a deeper conversation about these issues. |
