This memoir, written by Javier Zamora, a Salvadoran poet, recounts his extraordinary story of a 3,000-mile journey from El Salvador to the United States when he was just 9 years old in an attempt to reunite with his parents. After several tries to enter the United States, a "coyote" is hired to take him across the border. It's supposed to take only two weeks, but it takes four months. I loved this book! This moving account of a little boy trekking across rough terrain and the dangerous situations he encounters along the way is incredible. It was eye-opening to see the lengths people will go to in order to live in the United States. There is a lot to unpack in this book, which would lend itself to a lively discussion. |
