Mockingbird Summer is a coming-of-age story during the 1960s civil rights movement, a time when Jim Crow laws were still in effect. The narrative unfolds in a small Texas town where racism, discrimination, and segregation deeply affect the community. Corky, a naive 13-year-old girl, befriends America, a young Haitian girl from the other side of the tracks, and invites her to join the church softball team. This innocent gesture ignites tensions and sparks a townwide debate. The title "Mockingbird Summer" is inspired by the classic novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" and plays a crucial role in this story. This book explores themes of friendship, loyalty, social justice, and the importance of following one's moral compass. It will make an excellent Book Club selection. |
