This is an easy-to-read, compelling mystery. It starts strong, ends strong, and there's a lot to like about it. It's nicely plotted, with well-drawn characters, suspenseful, and has some surprising twists. The story's premise is also unusual. Troy, a freelance writer, rescues a boy who falls from a moving ferry only to discover no one misses him, which sets in motion her hunt for the truth. Aside from the mystery, there is also a well-developed story, a nice mix of family drama and romance. A strong debut. Recommended for fans of mysteries and fans of women's fiction who enjoy a good story.

When she sees what looks like a child tumbling from a ferry into frigid Lake Champlain, Troy Chance dives in without thinking. When she gets the child to shore she discovers that his name is Paul, he speaks only French-and no one is looking for him. Her determination to protect Paul pulls Troy from her quiet life as a writer in a small Adirondack town into an unfamiliar world of wealth and privilege in Canada and then in Vermont. Her attachment to him-and the danger she faces when she tries to unravel the mystery of his abandonment-force her to evaluate everything she thought true about herself.
