The first thing that comes to mind as I come to the end of this story is, I loved the complex but genuinely believable characters; character-driven books are my favorite kind. It's a beautiful story for sure, but also so much more. It was all about Ruth's journey. Her decisions and the ripple effects of choices she makes in life.
Race is just one of the things this book is about, and the author does it well. But it's also about motherhood and the pain of loss, discovering oneself, and the quest for the American dream. And then, there are the relationships depicted in this book. There are many, and they are all complex, well thought out, and well developed. This is a perfect book for book clubs. Recommend.
