Isola

by Allegra Goodman
Historical Fiction: Based on the true life of Marguerite de la Rocque, a young woman born into nobility in the 1500s is placed under her guardian's care- who proceeded to sell her inheritance to pay off his debt. Marguerite ends up on a remote island with her nurse and servant, who she loves. The story of her survival is beautifully written and immersive.-Isola By Allegra Goodmann

Book Review

(by- Linda )

I can't imagine a relative stealing my fortune and me not saying anything. Yet, it happens again and again in this story. Marguerite is an orphan and heir to her family's considerable wealth - yet when her uncle, her guardian, squanders it on exploratory adventures and personal pursuits- she is bound by tradition and her place in society (she is female) to say nothing. It really drives home how past generations of women had so little control over their own lives - being totally dependent on men.

I am angry just thinking about this reckless cad of a man. But I am equally inspired by Marguerite. She is born into wealth, shielded from the harsh realities of life, and destined for a life of prosperity.

Yet, when her circumstances drastically change, she evolves and fights for her survival. Stranded on a deserted island (by her uncle) in the middle of nowhere, her journey is punishing and often tests her resilience and will to survive. She faces relentlessly frigid winters, lack of food and proper shelter, and fears losing the only two people on the island with her.

Allegra Goodman creates a fantastic atmosphere, immersing the reader in the era and building emotional pull throughout the story.

I also love that the story is inspired by the real-life 16th-century French noblewoman Marguerite de la Rocque. This is a timeless story. Highly recommend.
