Book Review

The House of Eve is a historical novel about two young Black women, Ruby and Eleanor. Set in the 1950s, the story delves into the roller coaster of emotions and personal growth that comes with navigating unexpected motherhood. Despite challenges, they each work to create their own futures and find their identities.

Ruby dreams of becoming a doctor, but poverty and racism keep getting in her way. Eleanor is in college and trying to break away from her poor upbringing. But she soon discovers that the world of privilege comes with its own problems.

The book's standout feature is its exploration of themes like race, class, gender, and motherhood; they are presented with honesty and compassion. While at times heart-wrenching, Ruby and Eleanor's choices force the reader to think about the sacrifices they would make for their aspirations.

Even though the book deals with some heavy topics, it's inspiring. Ruby and Eleanor's determination to keep pushing forward, no matter what, touches your heart and makes The House of Eve a book that sticks with you. It's a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggles of Black women in pursuit of equality and a testament to the strength of the human spirit. I recommend it to anyone looking for a read that will challenge them and stay with them long after they finish the book.
